A letter of certification (much like a letter of certificate) is written to verify information, usually in the context of applying for something. For example somebody applying for a visitor visa to a foreign country may obtain a letter of certification from their place of employment verifying their intent.
Somebody in the business world may use a letter to certify a percentage of ownership in a company, or a job applicant may use a letter from a friend or former employer as a reference – this is called a “Certification Letter of Knowing a Person.”
If there is something formal to certify, a letter of certification can be used.
If you were looking for a new job, you would request a letter of certification from your previous employer verifying that you did work for them in the past and in what capacity.
Be specific with information, dates, and titles – for a certification to be of use it has to be accurate.
Include any relevant supporting documents as evidence that what is being certified is true.
Because these letter will invariably be used in a formal setting, write them in a formal manner.
Sara L. Brown
3146 Holden Street
Metropolis, IL 62960
This letter is to certify that James Brown worked as a general accountant at Triangle corp. for the period from November 5th, 2004 to December 12th, 2008.
While at our company, his responsibilities were to design and implement pricing controls in relation to our line of mathematical measuring devices.
Through our working relationship, I came to appreciate the attention to detail that James showed for his work and was deeply saddened when he departed our company.
I know that he will do a great job wherever you put him in your organization.
Sincerely,
Joseph Mancini
