Letter of Attestation

A letter of attestation is a letter that is written or signed to confirm a statement, action or behavior. The writer is certifying (attesting) that they personally witnessed or know something to be true.

For example a common practice for new employees to certain jobs is to fill out and sign a letter of attestation for good character, confirming that they do not have a criminal record or convictions related to sexual abuse or violent crime.

In a much less formal scenario employers may write a brief letter attesting to the good behavior of a former employee, to be used in future job applications.

Employers, colleges or the workers/students themselves may also submit a letter of attestation to an examiner confirming that they meet the requirements to sit an exam, such as completing coursework or having the required experience.

If someone has completed some specialized training, they may write a letter of attestation, with a signature on the bottom, stating that they completed the training. It is a form of self certification, but it is still a relatively valid document when confirming specific details.

Starting to Write

Never bend the truth or outright lie as you may be called upon in the future to defend your attestation. This may carry legal ramifications in cases involving criminal records.

It is also therefore important to clearly state what you’re attesting, without any ambiguous language.

Signing the letter often makes the act legally binding, so is therefore important in most formal scenarios. Without a signature you are just making a statement. Signing it confirms that you believe the statement is true.

Letter of Attestation for Good Behavior Sample

Dear Mr. Orton

I am writing this letter to attest that Peter Forster’s behaviour while volunteering to gain work experience at my offices was more than acceptable.

Peter had full attendance for the 4 week period, was never late to arrive at agreed times, and happily worked over time on at least one occasion to ensure some accounts were completed. I was pleased by his work ethic and feel he would make a great addition to any similar office environment.

If you have any queries, I can be contacted on 617-555-0191.
